Representation Match (Whole Numbers)

There are a few variations of Representation Match on the https://mathies.ca/games.php site and the Whole Numbers version is particularly suited to early primary students who are developing their sense of quantity of number.

You can choose the magnitude of numbers to work with as well as what representations to compare. In addition, you can choose whether you want the cards face up or face down. To introduce the activity, I suggest you leave the cards face up.

You then need to click on matching pairs which are then removed:

If two cards are chosen do not match, they simply remain where they are and you need to make the necessary corrections.

After all the cards are correctly paired, you get the choice to play again with the exact same cards, or to play again with the exact same choice of representations, or to play again with a new choice of representations.

There are a number of features that I like about this activity:

  • Students can use the different representations of the number to develop a deeper sense of the quantity involved.
  • Students will learn how a number can be decomposed and recomposed in a variety of ways. For example, in the picture above, the first two cards on the middle row show that 15 can be seen as 10 + 5, or 5 + 5 + 5 (on the rekenrek card), or 5 + 10, or 10 + 5, or 4 + 1 + 6 + 4 (on the dice card)
  • It is not a timed activity so students can take time to think through their answers

The activity is intuitive enough to be used independently (at school or at home), or as part of small group instruction. Also, it can be downloaded onto devices through Google Play or AppStore.
